توضیحات
Your research will involve “Breaking through the manufacturing ‘glass ceiling’ for ultra-high-purity ZBLAN glass optical fibres for quantum communication and faster internet”. ZBLAN is a special fluoride glass type that has been heralded for overcoming the current limits of fibre optics cables, however small-scale manual manufacturing and insufficient purity have hampered to achieve the potential of ZBLAN optical fibres.
The successful candidate will work as part of the Fibres and Photonics Materials research group at the Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing (IPAS) within the School of Physics, Chemistry and Earth Sciences (PCES) to make significant contributions to the development of:
- Novel and advanced methods of raw material purification
- Trace-metal analysis to monitor the purification processes
- Novel and advanced methods for improving the surface quality of ZBLAN glass preforms.
The successful candidate is expected to work on these specific project aspects while gaining valuable research experience in a collaborative and dynamic environment.
IPAS has an annual research budget of more than $15M p.a., a membership of more than 250 people, and is headquartered in a $100M bespoke research building on the CBD campus of the University of Adelaide. IPAS has a rare combination of glass science and optical fibre fabrication research facilities and expertise which has enabled the realisation of fibres with unique and novel properties. IPAS has also a range of optical diagnostic and precision manufacturing equipment including 3D metal and glass printing and 5-axis CNC mill with ultrasonic mode. Equally important, IPAS provides strategic grants support, business development support and facility management through a high-performing and professional team. IPAS works to create new lasers and sensors that stimulate the creation of new industries and improve productivity in existing industry.
To be successful you will need – Level A
- PhD or equivalent degree (or thesis submitted) in chemistry, chemical engineering or a related discipline
- Experience in one (or more) of the following areas:
- Design and establishment of purification systems and procedures
- Synthesis, purification, and characterisation of chemicals and materials
- Treatment and characterisation of material surfaces
- Compositional and structural analysis of chemicals, materials and surfaces
- Demonstrated publication track record in leading scientific journals and conferences, or equivalent for industry researchers
- Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research in addition to working effectively as a member of a research team, while having the ability to engage with industry partners and manage deliverables.
- Good verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills, including the ability to liaise and communicate effectively with professional and industry bodies, government and members of the community.
- Good organisational and time management skills, including willingness to follow and agreed project plan and meet realistic milestones
Additional requirements for Level B
- At least 2-year post-doctoral research experience mentioned in point (3)
- Experience in the supervision of research-support staff
- Demonstrated contribution to the design of research projects and preparation of research funding applications
- Experience in undertaking research with limited supervision
Desirable
- Experience in purification systems and procedure design and development
- Experience in inorganic material synthesis and purification
- Experience in using various analytical techniques to identify the composition and purity of inorganic materials, e.g. ICP-MS/OES, EPMA
- Experience in using various analytical techniques to identify the composition, structure and purity of the surfaces of inorganic materials, e.g. XPS, XRD
- Experience in dry and/or wet etching of inorganic glasses
- Experience in the management and/or maintenance of research laboratories, preferably cleanroom environment
